ALGECO was founded in Mâcon, France, as a company renting out storage facilities for the wine industry.
The company later expanded its business model to include the rental of tank wagons. In 1966, VTG, a wagon rental company that was already part of the Preussag Group, acquired a stake in ALGECO.
Since 1990, MBM MietSysteme, founded in Kehl in 1972 and active in the container rental business, has been part of ALGECO.
ALGECO acquired Hada, a company specialising in the rental of construction machinery and temporary accommodation for construction sites.
The Preussag Group, which had since been renamed TUI, sold its stake in ALGECO to the investment company TDR Capital in 2004. Under TDR Capital’s leadership, ALGECO was restructured and numerous companies were integrated into the Group.
TDR acquired the British Elliott Group.
The newly established ALGECO GmbH in Germany was merged with its sister company Hada.
TDR Capital acquired the US-based company William Scotsman and merged it with ALGECO to form the ALGECO Scotsman Group. In the same year, TDR Capital completed the acquisition of GE Modular Space and integrated the company into the newly established ALGECO Scotsman Group. GE Modular Space was part of GE Equipment Services, a division of General Electric that also operated in Germany.
The company continued to expand in the following years. In 2011, it acquired Ausco in Australia and Portacom in New Zealand, followed by the acquisition of Eurobras Group in Brazil and Target Logistics in the USA in 2013. In 2018, the Touax Group was integrated. In Germany, this included Siko Containerhandel GmbH, a company belonging to the Touax Group.
Following the separation of the North American business in 2018, ALGECO became part of the Modulaire Group.
Acquisition of Modulaire Group by Brookfield Business Partners L.P.
